Web Hosting and Designing

Apr 3rd, 2008 | By knup | Category: Web Design, Web Hosting

Today I want to discuss a little bit about Web Hosting and Web Designing.  What type of hosting do you use and what is best?  I started out using a “home grown” server located in my basement.  I know that sounds crazy, but back in the day, thats where I hosted my sites.  After one big burst of traffic, I quickly realized that was NOT a good solution whatsoever.  So the next step was to get on some Reseller Hosting.  I moved my few sites to a good quality reseller host and had great success there.  As the sites grew and traffic across the network grew, I started looking into some dedicated server options. I have a few sites in my network that require some “programming” and batch processes to run behind the scenes.  Having a dedicated server and having root priviliges is great for this type of thing.  I’ve now been on a dedicated server for over 2 years and have loved it.  No looking back!  Is it overkill?  Maybe.  But it gives me full control and forces me to learn some things about the “ins and outs” of hosting and servers.  So, what do you use?

My next question is do you design your sites yourself?  Or do you contract/hire the design work out?  I am terrible and Web Designing.  Just horrible.  I much prefer to find a free template or to find a great Web Designing firm to do my work.  I’m just not creative and these guys are.  How about you?

That’s it for today!

  1. A good tip I hope some folks on the startup side of blogging read is the reseller hosting. Not because I recommend they go in the hosting business … although that cna provide a handy income source … but because with a reseller account you have close to the flexibility of a dedicated server account with none of the hassles of server administration itself. And, at about $10 a month or even less, it’s nearly and unlimited resource for tiny startup sites and blogs.

When something ‘clicks’ and needs more resources you cna move it to a solution that has more horsepower, after the new venture is opaying for itself, and then launch your next venture on the old faithful reseller account launch pad.
