Holy Alexa ranking increase!

Sep 25th, 2007 | By knup | Category: Link Development

alexa_logo.gifSometimes things are simpler than they seem.  After being on the 45n5 Top 100 list (well just out of the Top 100), I decided to make an effort to move up this list. The first very apparent thing in my eyes was that knupNET had a very HIGH Alexa ranking.  Alexa ranking is one of those things I have never really responded to or taken action on.  My rank just 15 days ago was somewhere around 1,500,000+ and that seemed horrible.  I did a little research and took some advice from some other bloggers in the industry.  The biggest thing on the hit list was to simply install the Alexa toolbar in my browser and to install the Alexa widget on my site.  It can’t be that simple can it?  Well, partially yes!!! After a couple weeks – my Alexa rank has now jumped to 687,161 and still getting lower!  What other techniques can I use to lower this rank?  I’m shooting for top 500,000 in the near future!

  1. Congrats on the alexa jump, however the widget on your site does nothing according to the people at alexa (i asked them):

However the toolbar does work. Also note that people finding your blog via the top100 list and such are webmasters and likely have the bar installed also (like me, well the firefox extension anyway)

  2. Really??? Wow! Thanks for the post. Had missed that I guess. Most likely will remove the widget then and just continue on with the toolbar. Any other tips for increase?

When is your Top 100 updating again?

    Thanks!

  3. sometime between now and sunday…

I try not to run the script that often because alexa charges to use their api, very little, but still.

I can manually update your stats though ;-) look for it in a few.

  4. well it moved you from 140 to 137, at least it’s in the right direction ;-)

also note about alexa, the lower your number goes, the harder it will be to game it.

  5. Haha… Well, some improvement is better than no improvement :) What other factors are you using that I could work on increasing? thanks for your help!

  6. Creative blog topics, write something that goes viral!

  7. I think Mark’s statement that the lower your score the harder it is to change your Alexa score is true. On “high number” low-traffic blogs the sidebar widget does make a differnce, regardless what Alexa says, becuase a few months ago Everton Blair of Connteced Internet ran a participatory survey that I was involve din …in 7 “million count” blogs the widget and no other changes increased Alexa 19% overall … but, I doubt it will do much good for better ranking blogs.

The big problem I have is with Technorati … mark’s list (rightly, I suppose) is heavily influenced by Technorati ranking and I’m not attuned enough to know what, aside from “link trains” and other wastes of time to do to get higher there.

knupNET and my still-aborning RetiredPay went on Mark’s list almost the same day and were only a couple numbers apart as I recall … yoy have now moved up perhaps 20 numbers and I have dropped back nearly the same amount … so keep doing what you are doing.

  8. The Widget doesnt increase your alexa ranking but it ensures all the visitors are counted, at least thats my understanding.

I like the list but it kinda sucks for example according to the stats currently on the list my blog digitalorder has a 101381 tech and 488797 alexa and yet it ranks below knupNET with 177881 tech and 687161 alexa all because Google hasnt updated there PR while I’ve had my domain.

  9. Interesting revelations. My website ranks like 2million and over on alexa. i am going to install the script to get my going down as well. thanks for the tip

  10. no problem! Hope it helps you out. be sure to let me know how it turns out for you!

  11. By using the Alexa toolbar for three weeks to browse my site, my rank has improved …not great..but some imporvement.

The toolbar has made little difference, really.

However, since most of my visitors are from China where a lot of Pirated copies of Windows are shipped with Alexa as spyware, the rank for that area is quite good, but for everywhere else, remains almost static.
